Our Strategy for Good

Big Purpose Big Impact actively supports nonprofit/nongovernmental organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. To maximize our impact we focus our support in three main areas: micro business and entrepreneurial development as a means to reduce poverty; world peace and intercultural understanding; and strengthening community engagement/networks.

Our integrated approach moves beyond “checkbook philanthropy” alone and includes working with nonprofits in a variety of ways including general volunteering, pro bono services, product donations, and money. We strongly believe small businesses like ours can “Do Well by Doing Good.”

  • Participate in at least two volunteer service projects per year.
  • Donate the equivalent of at least 3% of our gross revenue. The goal is 1% cash, 1% volunteer time, and 1% product donations
  • Provide pro bono services in our areas of expertise to at least one nonprofit each year.
  • Donate our used equipment and other surplus goods to local nonprofits offering youth entrepreneurship or job skills training.
  • Actively seek nonprofit partners for joint program development and implementation, cause marketing, and as vendors.

Pro Bono Services

Florida Volunteer Generation Fund

Volunteer Florida’s Volunteer Generation Fund (VGF) program administered by Volunteer Florida helps organizations to more effectively recruit, manage, support and retain skills-based volunteers. Skills-based volunteering is a strategic type of volunteerism that expands the impact of community organizations by leveraging professionals’ skills. From accountants to lawyers and management professionals, skills-based volunteering leverages the experience, talents and education of volunteers and matches them with the needs of nonprofits.

VGF grants are given to community or faith-based organizations that maintain 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, or are a government entity in Florida. Grantees must be organizations that mobilizes people and resources to deliver creative solutions to community problems.

In 2019, Sue Hyatt, founder of Big Purpose Big Impact, provided pro bono evaluation services valued at over $17,000 as part of an external evaluation of the Florida Volunteer Generation Program.

The VGF evaluation included both process and outcome components. The process portion examined the support organizations receive from VF and how grantees utilized VGF resources to strengthen their capacity for skills-based volunteering.

The outcome portion examined the organizational changes resulting from being a VGF grantee and the sustainability of the skills-based volunteer program enhancements made over time.

Other Nonprofit Volunteering

More than 1.7 billion people around the world are unbanked and can’t access the financial services they need. Kiva is an international nonprofit, founded in 2005 in San Francisco, with a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive.

Kiva does this by crowdfunding loans and unlocking capital for the underserved, improving the quality and cost of financial services, and addressing the underlying barriers to financial access around the world. Through Kiva’s work, students can pay for tuition, women can start businesses, farmers are able to invest in equipment and families can afford needed emergency care.

By lending as little as $25 on Kiva, you can be part of the solution and make a real difference in someone’s life. 100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes to funding loans.

Sue Hyatt and Big Purpose Big Impact have made over 50 loans to women entrepreneurs in developing countries where she has either worked or travelled. These women are often blocked from participating in the larger economy and tapping more traditional forms of funding to grow their businesses.
